UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
The United Kingdom's Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a new requirement for travellers who do not need a visa to enter the UK. Here's an overview of who needs it, how it works, and how to apply:
Who Needs a UK ETA?
The ETA is required for nationals of certain countries who previously did not need a visa to enter the UK for short visits. Initially, it targets travellers from specific Gulf countries, like Qatar, but it will gradually expand to more countries.
Once fully implemented, the ETA is expected to be mandatory for all visa-exempt visitors who plan to enter the UK for up to six months for tourism, business, or other short-term purposes.
Starting January 8, 2025, visitors from the USA and Canada will need an ETA to travel to the UK. Check when you can get an electronic travel authorization (ETA).
Everyone, including children and babies, needs an ETA.
How Does the UK ETA Work?
The ETA is an electronic document linked to the traveller's passport. When the traveller enters the country, UK immigration authorities check it. The ETA is valid for multiple entries during a specified period.
It is recommended that travellers apply well before their planned arrival to ensure approval, though decisions are typically provided quickly.
