Booking a Flight

Travelling is an exciting adventure, but booking flights to get where you want to go can sometimes feel overwhelming. I spend hours online looking at airline websites and booking apps, trying to find the best options. I look at several elements, including how many stops they make, what airports they stop at, and how long the wait is between transfers. I even look at the types of planes flying and seat layouts. It can take me weeks to make a final decision on who I'm going to fly with. Flying is expensive, especially if your departure point is in Canada. I want to ensure I get good value for my money.

  1. Book in Advance

Timing is crucial when booking flights. To get the best prices, buy your ticket 2-6 months in advance when airlines usually offer their most competitive rates. Carriers often charge much higher prices as departure dates get closer, especially for international flights.

2. Compare Prices

To get the best fare, use online apps or websites that compare flights from multiple airlines. Using Google Flights, Skyscanner, or Kayak is a quick and easy way to compare prices from different carriers, providing a clear picture of your options. They often allow you to set price alerts to notify you if fare prices drop.

3. Be Flexible With Dates

Booking your flights well in advance can be to your advantage. If your travel dates are flexible, consider changing your departure or return dates by a few days. Flights are often less expensive midweek compared to weekends.

4. Watch for Hidden Fees

Before locking in your ticket, be aware of any hidden costs that could inflate the total price. Many budget airlines offer lower fares but charge extra for seat selection, checked and carry-on baggage, meals or wifi. Read the fine print to know what's included in your fare and what extras might add up.

5. Leverage Airline Miles and Credit Card Points

If you're part of a frequent flyer program or have credit card points, check if you can redeem them for your flight. Airline miles or travel rewards points can lower your ticket cost or even cover it. Additionally, many travel-focused credit cards offer points or discounts when booking through their platform.

6.Review Airline Policies

Before booking a flight, check the airline's cancellations, changes, and baggage policies. You want to avoid getting slammed with extra fees when you least expect it.
